Patient Information

This page provides useful medical information on common urological conditions, and links to other web pages of interest.

Lower urinary tract symptoms can be divided in to two groups:

Storage symptoms such as urinary frequency, urgency (rushing to the toilet), and nocturia (the need to get up to pass urine at night).

OR

Voiding symptoms such as poor urinary flow, hesitancy (difficulty initiating micturition), straining, and an intermittent (stop/start) urinary flow.

These symptoms can occur in isolation or in combination. They can be caused by an overactive bladder (Detrusor overactivity) or reflect an obstruction such as that seen in benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH).

What is the prostate

Prostate problems explained

Surgery to the prostate for benign enlargement:
TURP – Trans Urethral Resection of Prostate (removes prostate tissue causing obstruction)

Surgery for the removal of superficial blaader tumours:
TURBT – Trans Urethral Resection of Bladder Tumour (removal of bladder tumour)

Kidney stone removal

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men (lung is the leading cause).

There are three main options of management:

Surgery to remove the prostate along with the cancer eg robotic radical prostatectomy

Radiotherapy, which includes external beam and brachytherapy

Active surveillance. This involves regular PSA blood tests, and a repeat prostate biopsy

Your doctor will discuss each of these options with you.
