Edward Rowe, Consultant Urologist. BSc (Hons), MRCS (RCS Eng), MD, FRCS (Urol)

Personal Profile

Medical Training

Having completed an intercalated BSc in Anatomy in 1993, Mr Rowe qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical in July 1995. His house officer year was spent at Charing Cross and the West Middlesex Hospitals, before completing 6 months in accident and emergency at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and then 6 months teaching anatomy as a 'demonstrator' to medical students.

He began basic surgical training with 6 month posts in paediatric surgery and orthopaedics at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, follow by a year in Southend Hospital in General and Vascular surgery. During this time he passed the Royal College of Surgeons membership exam.

He then began speciality training with a 6 month post in Urology at St Mary's Hospital, and subsequently began a 2 year period of research into prostate cancer screening as part of an M.D which was awarded in 2005.

In 2002 he started Specialist Registrar training in urology on the North West Thames region. Having completed 3 years of core urology training at Watford, Wexham Park, and Hillingdon Hospitals, he gained a further 3 years of sub-speciality training in uro-oncology at Charing Cross, St Mary's and the Royal Marsden Hospitals.

Current Position

He was appointed as a consultant urologist in the North Bristol NHS Trust in October 2007. The post involves general urology (eg medical and surgical treatment of urinary symptoms, and inguino-scrotal operations) with a sub-specialist interest in uro-oncology, in particular the diagnosis and treatment of urological malignancy including Prostate, Kidney, Bladder and Penile cancer.

He is urology cancer lead for the North Bristol NHS Trust which is the urology cancer centre for the region.

The majority of the operations he performs are for uro-oncological disease. These include Radical Prostatectomy (removal of the prostate for prostate cancer), Radical Cystectomy (removal of the bladder for cancer), Radical Nephrectomy (removal of the kidney for cancer), and penile cancer operations including groin node clearance procedures.

He also performs Robotic Radical Prostatectomies using the da Vinci system. He completed 2 years training in robotic surgery at St Mary's and the Royal Marsden Hospitals. Early analysis of the data suggests that by using the da Vinci system, the surgical outcome in terms of both cancer clearance, and functional results (potency and a faster return to urinary continence) can be enhanced. The 100th robotic radical prostatectomy in Bristol was performed in early 2010. The plan is to extend the application of the da Vinci system to other operations including cystectomy.

Through accurate data collection, regular audit and strict adherence to the multi-disciplinary process we hope to maintain the highest standards of patient care in the diagnosis and treatment of urological cancers. The department has an impressive track record of high quality research (Bristol Urological Institute). The long term aim of the department is to become a world leader in the research, diagnosis and treatment of urological malignancy.
